5 things to know about WHO's world hand hygiene day

Brian Zimmerman -

Every year since 2009 the World Health Organization has devoted an entire day to promote the improvement of hand hygiene in healthcare around the globe. The campaign is called "Save Lives: Clean Your Hands."

This year's campaign is slated to launch Friday. Here are five things to know about Save Lives: Clean Your Hands 2017.

1. In addition to hand hygiene, this year's campaign materials are co-branded with slogans about fighting antibiotic resistance to illuminate the link between reducing drug resistance and infection prevention and control protocols like practicing good hand hygiene. 2. For the campaign, the WHO is calling on all healthcare workers to clean their hands at the appropriate moments, all CEOs and hospital leadership to back infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programs, all infection control leaders to direct hand hygiene improvement campaigns, and all policy makers to commit national support to infection prevention in order to hinder the evolution of antibiotic resistance.

3. On Friday, the WHO will host a free online class on infection prevention, hand hygiene and reducing antibiotic resistance. To register for the class, click here.

4. Additionally, the WHO will release a practical manual and other tools to support the implementation of infection prevention programs.
