44 states affected by salmonella outbreak tied to live poultry

Harrison Cook -

The CDC on July 13 confirmed a multistate outbreak of salmonella linked to poultry.

Cases of salmonella occurred between February 15 and June 21. Infected individuals reported having touched live chickens or ducks found in backyard flocks or generally in the environment.

Epidemiologic investigations link the salmonella outbreak to poultry from multiple hatcheries.

So far, there have been 212 reported cases across 44 states, with 34 hospitalizations. Twenty-six percent of ill people were children under age 5.

No deaths have reported.
