4 University of Rhode Island students diagnosed with mumps

Four students at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston have contracted the mumps, according to a report from NBC-10 News.

Clinicians with the state health department and medical professionals with the university are reportedly monitoring the situation.

"All appropriate measures, as recommended by the Rhode Island Department of Health and CDC, have been and are being followed," said Ellen Reynolds, the university's director of health services, according to NBC-10 News. "Health services is advising everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of this virus. Two doses of mumps vaccine protects approximately nine of 10 people who receive it."

Mumps is a highly communicable virus spread via person-to-person contact, which causes painful swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.
