Four nurses who have saved lives outside the workplace:

1. A Madison County (Fla.) Central School nurse, Annie Dyke, RN, and the school resource officer revived a 14-year-old boy after his pacemaker stopped working Oct. 8, local NBC affiliate WECT reported. After the boy was found unresponsive on the gym floor, the nurse and officer used an automatic defibrillator and gave chest compressions to restart his heart. The boy has recovered and his pacemaker was reprogrammed.

2. Angela Mirador, a Washington nurse at an assisted living center, performed life-saving CPR on her neighbor suffering from cardiac arrest, USA Today affiliate Kitsap Sun reported. The 42-year-old man had just returned from a run, began to feel dizzy and collapsed. While paramedics were delayed in traffic, Ms. Mirador called 911 and performed chest compressions until emergency help arrived. Physicians would later diagnose the neighbor with coronary artery disease.

3. Lindsey Michno, a nurse at Durham, N.C.-based Duke Regional Hospital, ran out of her house to save an 11-year-old girl from a dog attack, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL. Ms. Michno heard screaming and ran outside to find a bull terrier biting a girl lying on the curb. The nurse was attacked by the dog as she tried to pull it off the girl. The dog was subdued after Ms. Michno threw it into a neighbor's van.

4. A mystery nurse saved a 75-year-old man who collapsed in a Wrentham, Mass.-based church, local CBS affiliate WBZ reported. A nurse seated behind the man immediately started performing chest compressions, aided by multiple other nurses in the congregation, until emergency responders took over. The patient was rushed to Norwood (Mass.) Hospital and then transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit at Brigham and Women's Primary Care Associates at Norwood (Mass.), where he remains in serious condition.
