10 Medical Conditions With the Highest Readmission Rates

Sickle cell anemia had the highest 30-day readmission rates of any conditions diagnosed in 2010, according to a statistical brief from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Ten conditions with the highest readmission rates in 2010, according to the brief, were:

1. Sickle cell anemia — 31.9 percent of patients were readmitted.
2. Gangrene — 31.6 percent of patients were readmitted.
3. Hepatitis — 30.9 percent of patients were readmitted.
4. Disease of white blood cells — 30.6 percent of patients were readmitted.
5. Chronic renal failure — 27.4 percent of patients were readmitted.
6. Systemic lupus erythematosus and connective tissue disorders — 27.2 percent of patients were readmitted.
7. Mycoses — 27.0 percent of patients were readmitted.
8. HIV infection — 26.4 percent of patients were readmitted.
9. Screening and history of mental health and substance abuse — 26.0 percent of patients were readmitted.
10. Peritonitis and intestinal abscess — 25.0 percent of patients were readmitted.
