There are plans to build a $400,000 security fence around the official residence of Gov. Kristi Noem, officials said Aug. 12, according to NBC News.
The governor's office did not elaborate on the threats to Ms. Noem's safety but said that her security team had recommended the fence. The governor's spokesperson, Maggie Seidel, also said that Ms. Noem's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has put her at odds with some people, NBC News reports.
Ms. Noem frequently has downplayed the danger of the coronavirus, according to NBC, and welcomed large gatherings in the state, most recently the Sturgis motorcycle rally, which included hundreds of thousands of attendees.
