NIH kicks off study on COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy

The National Institutes of Health will assess the use of COVID-19 vaccines in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding through a new national study, the organization said June 23.

Three things to know:

1. The national study will enroll up to 750 women who are vaccinated during pregnancy and 250 who get the vaccine within two months of giving birth, along with their infants.

2. Researchers will assess vaccine safety and the immune response in trial participants. They'll also study the transfer of antibodies to infants from the placenta and breast milk.

3. Physicians at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will oversee the research, which will be conducted at up to 20 clinical sites nationwide.
