Flu activity still high in 2 regions

Flu metrics continue their steady decline in most of the U.S., though New Mexico and New York City are still reporting high levels of activity, according to the CDC's latest FluView report

For the second consecutive week, no states or regions reported very high levels of flu activity for the week ending Jan. 21. In addition to New Mexico and New York City, Puerto Rico reported high levels. The majority of the nation reports minimal levels of activity.

Here are four more notes on flu trends, based on the latest FluView report:

  1. Just over 4,000 patients with lab-confirmed flu were admitted to a hospital for the week ending Jan. 21, down about 5 percent from the week prior.
  1. Six influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported for the week ending Jan. 21, with a total of 91 pediatric flu deaths in the 2022-23 season.
  1. About 2.6 percent of outpatient visits were for influenza-like illness — meaning fever plus cough or sore throat, not lab-confirmed flu — for the week ending Jan. 21, marking the eighth straight week of decline.
  1. The CDC estimates there have been at least 25 million flu cases, 280,000 hospitalizations and 17,000 deaths so far this season.
