3 health risk factors rising, falling

The share of adults participating in three of the most common health risk factors has shifted this year, with the rates of two of them, smoking tobacco and obesity, decreasing, USA Facts found.

The "America in Facts 2024" report, published in July, used data from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and CDC to calculate the changes in common risk factors in 2022.

Here are four things to know:

1. The obesity rate slightly declined to 33.6% in 2022; however, it's still six percentage points higher than in 2011.

2. The share of adults smoking tobacco has continued to decline, reaching 13.5% in 2022.

3. Adults who binge drink alcohol increased to 16.9% in 2022, a 1.6 percentage point increase over 2021.

4. Life expectancy increased overall by 1.1 years — up to 77.5 — after decreasing in 2020 and 2021.
