Legionnaires' case confirmed in Ohio nursing home

A case of Legionnaires' disease was confirmed at Pataskala (Ohio) Oaks Care Center Jan. 21, ABC affiliate WSYX reports.

The patient is a 45-year-old man who resides at the center but "doesn't even present to be sick at all," Derrick Ratliff, operations director of the 86-bed facility, told WSYX.

Though the source of the bacteria is currently unknown, the care center has installed filters on showerheads and sinks, Mr. Ratliff said. Water fountains have been turned off, and patients drink bottled water instead. Legionella bacteria has not yet been discovered in the building.

"We speculate that there is a good chance that it came from somewhere else. Our belief is that is the case," Mr. Ratliff told WSYX.

The facility must notify the health department of a Legionnaires' case, but has yet to hang signage or email families about it.
