Potential court battle looms over nursing home chain's unpaid rent

Kelly Gooch -

HCR ManorCare, a Toledo, Ohio-based provider of short-term, post-hospital services and long-term care, has only days left to respond to a lawsuit claiming it owes months of unpaid rent, according to Reuters.

The nursing home chain's landlord, Quality Care Properties, filed the lawsuit two months ago. In the lawsuit, Quality Care claims ManorCare owes more than $300 million in rent at hundreds of locations, according to Reuters. Quality Care is also calling for the appointment of a receiver to replace ManorCare management.

While eviction is an option for landlords to recoup owed rent, the report notes Quality Care proposed going in another direction "because the leased properties care for approximately 30,000 patients — many of whom are elderly, vulnerable and require specialized care — [and] abrupt eviction could cause substantial harm."

ManorCare's deadline to respond to the lawsuit is Thursday.

The nursing home chain declined to comment to Reuters. However, the publication reports ManorCare previously said it had been negotiating its master lease agreement and continues its focus on high-quality patient care.
