Does anyone remember the Ploss Valve? It was this nifty little piece of plastic that created a switch valve that allowed us to simultaneously monitor the patients’ blood pressure, pulse and respirations through our earpiece. Long before the days of automated blood pressure cuffs and the invention of the pulse oximeter, when setting up your room, this was one of the first things you looked for and checked that it was not cracked or leaking air.
