Public health emergency declared in Puerto Rico after earthquakes

HHS has declared a public health emergency in Puerto Rico after a series of earthquakes and aftershocks in the region this week.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Puerto Rico Jan. 7, after which aftershocks could be felt all over the island, according to CNN. In the 24 hours after the earthquake, the island experienced about 50 seismic events of magnitude 2.5 or higher. About two-thirds of island lost electricity, and many people didn't have water as of Jan. 8.

On Jan. 6, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit the island.

"Across HHS, we have worked closely with the territory's health and human services authorities on disaster recovery and will continue to do everything we can to help ensure the health and well-being of people across the island," said HHS Secretary Alex. M. Azar II.

The public health emergency declaration mobilizes federal resources to quickly assist healthcare facilities in responding to medical needs. The disaster distress helpline also has been activated to help residents cope wistress.

HHS has authorized flexibilities for CMS beneficiaries in Puerto Rico to allow healthcare organization to more efficiently address their medical needs.
