Oklahoma hospital employees receive food donations as shutdown continues

Alyssa Rege -

A nonprofit organization is stepping in to help employees at Claremore (Okla.) Indian Hospital as the government shutdown continues, News On 6 reports.

Employees at Claremore Indian Hospital reached out to members of the community for supplies and donations as they continue to go without pay during the federal government shutdown, which has entered its third week.

Layla Freeman, founder of the nonprofit Light of Hope, said the organization rallied the community and posted on social media asking for donations. This past weekend, Light of Hope helped serve 84 people.

"They are medical staff, they are nurses, they are doctors, they are ER surgical techs. They are qualified people but they are not getting paid and they have to continue to work," Ms. Freeman told News On 6.

While some supplies have begun to run low, Ms. Freeman said she trusts the community to continue to help those in need.
