KLAS ranks population health management vendors: 4 things to know

Kelly Gooch -

Research and insights firm KLAS has published a new performance report with its rankings for population health management vendors.

For the report, researchers spoke to 278 providers about their experience using population health management solutions. KLAS said the focus of this report came from providers telling the firm in the 2016 Population Health Management Perception report that their biggest gap in population health management was data aggregation, so KLAS focused on data aggregation for the performance report.

The performance report set out to answer the following:

  • Which vendors are geared to meet needs for more data faster and with less effort?
  • Which companies has strengthened and tuned their workflows for program administrators, care managers and clinicians at the point of care?
  • Which partners are adaptable, responsive and cane help providers stay solvent in a rapidly changing, high-risk environment?

Here are four things to know from this report.

1. Enli Health Intelligence and i2i Population Health "make aggregation simpler for providers with a few (or fewer) EMR feeds," while Valence Health "handles more feeds, but greater effort is required of customers," according to the KLAS report. Philips Wellcentive "strikes a balance thanks to broad experience and a proactive data management strategy that pairs data experts with individual customers," the firm said.

2. Among fully rated population health management vendors, athenahealth, Optum, and Philips Wellcentive have the highest percentage of customers merging both clinical data from EMRs and claims data from payers, according to the KLAS report. Cerner customers commonly aggregate from payers and non-Cerner EMRs, the report notes, and Epic users are in the early stages of doing both.

3. Among fully rated population health management vendors, Philips Wellcentive ranks highest for flexibility to adapt to the latest population health management requirements, scoring 8.0 out of a possible 9.0. Following Philips Wellcentive is Enli (7.9), Cerner (7.7), Epic (7.2), i2i Population Health (7.1) and Advisory Board (7.0). The lowest scoring was Verscend, at 5.5.

4. According to KLAS, no population health management vendor can meet all needs for all types of customers. However, the firm's study found that Enli and i2i satisfy a number of population health management roles, while Cerner and IBM Watson Health "bridge the data needs of both program administrators and care managers." Allscripts and Philips Wellcentive, according to KLAS, "streamline workflows for care managers and clinicians using EMRs at the point of care" and Advisory Board, athenahealth, Optum and Valence "have difficulty keeping up with complex needs of larger customers."
