HRSA proposes new hospital scorecard to boost organ donor outreach

Emily Rappleye -

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration proposed a new hospital scorecard Monday that would recognize organizations for educating and registering patients as organ donors.

About 14,000 people, living and dead, donate organs annually, according to HRSA. However, about 120,000 Americans are waiting on an organ transplant — meaning the demand far outweighs the supply. HRSA's proposal aims to incentivize hospitals to host education and registry events for organ, eye and tissue donors. As part of the notice, HRSA outlined 40 actionable strategies hospitals can use to engage potential donors, which the agency says "eases the process of planning and participation for hospital teams," according to the announcement.

The scorecard would award hospitals points based on what promotional activities they implement. HRSA would award bronze, silver, gold and platinum certificates for hospitals that achieve the corresponding point level.

Published in the Federal Register Nov. 14, the notice is open for comment until Jan. 13, 2017. Find more information and submit a comment here.
