Healthy Nevada Project combines genetics with population health for new study

Julie Spitzer -

The Renown Institute for Health Innovation will launch a new study to examine how genetic, clinical, environmental and socioeconomic factors affect population health, dubbed the Health Nevada Project.

Renown IHI tapped SAS, an analytics software and service provider, to help them make sense of its data. Renown IHI researchers, physicians and data scientists will use  SAS to develop a health determinants platform that can identify population health risks from patient information including gender, age, and personal or family health history. It will also highlight public health risks such as disease, illness and the effects of environmental factors, like air quality.

The insights researchers gain from SAS will enable Renown IHI to analyze population health outcomes and how they relate to genetic information and other factors.

"SAS is the only vendor in the advanced analytics market with the proven capability and capacity to extract, control and infer numerically validated results from extraordinarily large data sets like those in the healthcare and environmental science sectors," said Jim Metcalf, Chief Data Scientist of the Healthy Nevada Project.

The Healthy Nevada Project enrolled 10,000 participants in its pilot phase. The second phase of the study — which starts this month — will open enrollment to 40,000 more Nevadans.
