Geisinger to launch radical population health initiative

David T. Feinberg, MD, president and CEO of Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, will unveil a new population health initiative at the StartUp Health Festival in San Francisco Jan. 10.

Dr. Feinberg will detail the initiative, dubbed Springboard Health, in one of the festival's fireside chats, called the Rise of Healthcare's Emerging Innovation Hubs. He will be joined by Richard Zane, MD, chief innovation officer at Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth, and Esther Dyson, philanthropist, angel investor and executive founder of Way to Wellville, who also serves on the advisory council of Springboard Health.

During the discussion, Dr. Feinberg will share the concept, components and planned execution of the population health initiative, which intends to take a radical approach in transforming the health of the community. The program will launch in Scranton, Pa., with Springboard Healthy Scranton, and will focus on coordinating and collaborating with local stakeholders to alleviate chronic medical conditions, eliminate preventable cancers and address the socioeconomic health of the community.

"When it comes to the social determinants of health, we know there are many more causes impacting the health of a population than access to quality medical care," Dr. Feinberg said in a statement. "We want to transform healthcare at its core by focusing on preventive care, behavioral health and economic growth."

After it's developed, tested and implemented, Springboard Healthy Scranton projects will help create cost-effective, sustainable solutions. Once proven effective, the data-driven programs could be replicated nationally and globally.
