CDC investigates cluster of lung diseases potentially linked to e-cigarettes

The CDC is investigating a cluster of serious lung illnesses, which the agency believes may be linked to e-cigarette use.

Fourteen states have reported 94 possible cases of lung illnesses since June 28, with 30 cases in Wisconsin alone. The CDC said it needs more information to determine whether the cases were caused by e-cigarettes, but added there is no evidence the illnesses stem from an infectious disease. The agency is collaborating with the Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Indiana and Minnesota health departments to conduct the investigation.

The CDC has not linked the illnesses to any specific product. E-cigarettes are thought to be safer than traditional cigarettes, but little is known about the products' long-term effects.
