Amazon's inadvertent baby registry emails 'salt on the wound' after miscarriages

Amazon mistakenly delivered emails regarding nonexistent baby registries to a number of customers Sept. 19, CNN reports.

The emails alerted customers someone had bought a gift off their supposed registry, reading "Someone great recently purchased a gift from your baby registry." The emails also included a link to the recipient's "Thank You List," however, the link redirected a majority of customers to a page to set up a new registry.

Many customers did not have a baby registry. Some, like Twitter user Julia Claire, called the email "salt on the wound" after her two miscarriages, the News & Observer reports. A Facebook user named Ashlyn Montgomery also took to social media to discuss her disappointment.

Ms. Montgomery, who still had an active baby registry on Amazon for a child who was delivered stillborn five months ago, wrote, "Mistakes happen — I get that, but this mistake needed a much kinder apology for something that is such a sensitive issue when it comes to infertility and loss."

An Amazon spokesperson told CNN a technical glitch caused the company to "inadvertently send a gift alert e-mail." The company is reportedly in the process of alerting affected customers.
