Walgreens to open smaller locations focused on pharmacy, healthcare

Walgreens Boots Alliance plans to develop more than 30 "small store" pharmacies, mostly in big cities, that will focus less on retail and more on health and wellness, according to Forbes.

Walgreens has recently introduced several new strategies to cut costs and become more competitive in the future, saying it plans to cut $1.8 billion annually by fiscal year 2022.

Alex Gourlay, the company's co-chief operating officer, reportedly told analysts the company is currently planning 30 or 40 small store locations. He didn't say whether the stores would look the same in every market, but said they would be more focused on pharmacy and over-the-counter healthcare products.

The company also confirmed that 20 locations are already open and the rest are under construction.
