Walgreens pays nearly $2M to settle claims with MassHealth

Walgreens will pay about $2 million to resolve two lawsuits alleging it overcharged the Massachusetts Medicaid program and falsified information on some of the reimbursement claims, according to The Berkshire Eagle.

The lawsuit, brought by the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, alleged Walgreens submitted claims to MassHealth that reported prices for several drugs at higher amounts than what Walgreens charged. In addition, the lawsuit claimed that Walgreens falsified information, including the quantity of insulin and days' supply dispensed.

"Walgreens repeatedly failed to provide MassHealth with accurate information regarding its dispensing and billing practices, resulting in overpayment to the company at taxpayers' expense," Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey told the Berkshire Eagle. "We will continue to investigate cases of fraud and take action to protect the integrity of MassHealth."

The two separate settlements arose from whistle-blower actions.
