Walgreens CMO to depart: 4 things to know

Walgreens CMO Patrick Carroll, MD, will leave the retail pharmacy giant to join health and wellness company Hims & Hers as its first CMO, the executive announced in a blog post July 9

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Carroll joined Walgreens in May 2014 as division vice president and CMO of healthcare clinics. He was later promoted to CMO of clinical programs and alliances.

2. "I got into medicine to help people, but after more than 25 years of practicing, it has become clear to me the health care system isn’t putting people first," Dr. Carroll blogged. "This is a big reason why I’m thrilled to announce I have left Walgreens and joined Hims & Hers as their first CMO."

3. Dr. Carroll joins a list of executives joining the fast-growing company. In May, the company hired Melissa Waters from Lyft to serve as its chief marketing officer; in March it hired Spencer Lee from Minted as CFO; and former Google engineer Charles Henrich joined as chief product and technology officer this year as well.

4. Hims & Hers consists of two brands. Hims, which launched in 2017, is a direct-to-consumer wellness website for men that offers hair-loss treatments and erectile dysfunction pills. Hers, launched in 2018, offers women access to telehealth and birth control prescriptions.
