Nation's 1st prescription drug affordability board goes into effect

The nation's first prescription drug affordability board will begin to take shape after a Maryland law allowing the creation of the board in went into effect July 1, according to WBAL NewsRadio. 

In April, Maryland approved the first-of-its-kind bill to create a board that will evaluate drug prices and set limits on how much state and local governments pay for high-cost prescription medications. The goal is to lower prescription drug-spending in the state.

After the board is established, it will study if the limits should be extended to private healthcare plans.

The governor and legislative leaders will appoint members to the board.
