Independent Maine pharmacy owner says he's unfazed by nearby Walgreens

A Belfast, Maine-based pharmacist opened an independent pharmacy right across the street from a Walgreens, and he isn't worried about competition, the Bangor Daily News reported

Though independent pharmacies are closing across the country, pharmacist Kevin Holland said he believes his business offers something unique.

Dr. Holland's pharmacy, Belfast Drug Co., doesn't offer convenience store items like Walgreens. It focuses solely on medical equipment and health and beauty products.

Dr. Holland told the Bangor Daily News that he is able to hire enough staff so his pharmacists can spend one-on-one time with customers and counsel them on their prescriptions.

And he'll work with major insurance companies to ensure his medications are affordable for his customers.

He'll also offer prescription deliveries for customers who aren't able to come to his pharmacy, he said.

"It’s like an old-time pharmacy," he said. "There aren’t shareholders in boardrooms, asking where the profits are," Dr. Holland told the Bangor Daily News.
