Better pharmacy access sought for rural Colorado residents

Alia Paavola -

Rep. Marc Catlin, R-Colo., has proposed a bill that would allow rural Colorado residents to fill prescriptions covered by insurance at the pharmacy of their choice, according to The Journal.

Under his bill, rural residents could pick a local pharmacy instead of traveling hours or miles to one that insurance covers.

The bill, supported by rural residents, is likely to ignite a battle between lawmakers, pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers.

Supporters say the bill would chip away at pharmacy and insurance company's networks, which restrict where people can get care and prescriptions. Opponents, including major pharmacies, say dismantling this network would drive up the cost of prescription drugs.
