9 pharma bankruptcies this year

Nine pharmaceutical companies or suppliers that filed for bankruptcy since Jan. 1, as reported by Becker's Hospital Review:

1. Insys files for bankruptcy
Insys Therapeutics filed for bankruptcy less than one week after agreeing to pay $225 million to settle a probe into alleged improper marketing of its opioid painkiller.

2. Massachusetts pharma company files for bankruptcy
Aegerion Pharmaceuticals, a Cambridge, Mass.-based drugmaker filed for bankruptcy, in May.

3. San Francisco drugmaker files for bankruptcy, eyes sale
Achaogen, a biopharmaceutical company based in South San Francisco, Calif., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 15.

4. New York pharmaceutical firm files for bankruptcy protection
Aceto Corp., a New York-based firm developing and selling human health products, pharmaceutical ingredients and performance chemicals, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

5. Pernix Therapeutics files for bankruptcy, blames generic competition
Pharmaceutical company Pernix Therapeutics Holdings, based in New Jersey, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 18 amid lagging drug sales.

6. New Jersey drugmaker files for bankruptcy
Immune Pharmaceuticals, a New Jersey-based biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of treatments for immunologic and inflammatory diseases, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 19.

7. J&J's talc supplier files for bankruptcy as cancer lawsuit risks rise
Imerys Talc America, which supplies talc for Johnson & Johnson's baby powder, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 13.

8. Specialty drugmaker enters bankruptcy
Avadel Specialty Pharmaceuticals has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after reporting underperforming sales of its drug to curb nighttime urination.

9. Pharma company files for bankruptcy after backlash over price hikes
Chicago-based Novum Pharma filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 1, and plans to sell its assets.
