San Francisco's health network — which includes Zuckerberg San Francisco General — finalized its first contract with a private health plan, according to Mission Local.
Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital made headlines after a Vox report revealed the hospital was out of network with all private health plans, leaving patients with massive bills. Since the story ran, the city's largest public hospital has made efforts to evaluate and change its billing practices.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health told Mission Local the contract was not in reaction to the billing controversies.
Under the contract with private insurer Canopy Health, for example, expectant mothers can deliver at Zuckerberg hospital and have their care covered by a private insurer. Expectant mothers at Zuckerberg were mostly Medi-Cal or uninsured patients prior to the change.
