WellStar, Anthem to let contract expire

Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System and Anthem will let an in-network contract expire for Anthem members with ACA exchange coverage, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

WellStar, which comprises nearly a dozen hospitals, three health parks and 10 urgent care clinics, will no longer be considered in network for Anthem's individual policyholders after the contract expires Feb. 4. As a result, affected members will have to pay large out-of-pocket costs to access WellStar providers.

The organizations did not disclose the number of patients that could be affected. Anthem told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution it would continue coverage for patients with ongoing treatment. The insurer added, "Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement on affordability with WellStar, which chose not to continue to participate in [Anthem's Pathway product, the policy for individuals and some groups] as other providers have."

In a statement to the publication, WellStar said it was "surprised and disappointed."

"Unfortunately, although WellStar has repeatedly requested a proposal from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to participate in their Pathways health exchange products, we have not been offered a contract to participate," the insurer said.
