UnitedHealthcare offers free emotional support line to those affected by mass shootings

Kelly Gooch -

UnitedHealthcare is offering free emotional support for people affected by last weekend's mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

The support will be offered through Optum's emotional support help line at 866-342-6892.

The line will provide access to specially trained Optum mental health specialists to help people with stress and anxiety management, said Optum, a subsidiary of Eden Prairie, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group. It will also provide referrals to people for community resources to help address financial, legal and other concerns.

The line will be open 24 hours, seven days a week for as long as needed.

"Unexpected violence and loss can result in feelings of fear, panic, grief or guilt among people who have a connection to the event and others in the community, or even those who are watching it on the news," said Martin H. Rosenzweig, MD, CMO of Optum Behavioral Solutions. "These feelings can emerge days, or even weeks later. Talking through these reactions with caring professionals is an important source of support during difficult times."
