UnitedHealthcare names CEO; Optum appoints CEOs across 3 divisions

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group made changes to the executive teams of its UnitedHealthcare and Optum operations, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports.

UnitedHealth CEO Stephen Hemsley said the organization shuffles its executive team every two to three years, according to the report.

Here are six things to know.

1. Steve Nelson, former leader of UnitedHealthcare's Medicare and retirement business, will serve as CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

2. UnitedHealthcare CFO Dan Schumacher will become president of the insurance branch.

3. Andrew Hayek will serve as CEO of Optum subsidiary OptumHealth, which provides services for health management. Prior to the appointment, Mr. Hayek served as CEO of Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates, which Optum purchased for $2.3 billion in early 2017.

4. John Prince will helm OptumRx, the pharmacy benefit management platform of Optum, as CEO. He most recently served as COO and executive vice president of Optum, according to Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. He succeeds Mark Peer, who left to "pursue his own investment interests."

5. Dirk McMahon will be operating president of Optum and manage the business' technology division. He previously served as CEO of OptumRx and executive vice president of UnitedHealth's enterprise operations.

6. UnitedHealth named Eric Murphy CEO of OptumInsight, Optum's advisory consulting branch. He previously served as enterprise growth officer for Optum.
