UnitedHealth scoops up physicians in purchase of 63K-member plan

UnitedHealth Group will acquire four clinics through its purchase of Peoples Health, a Metairie, La.-based Medicare Advantage plan, according to the Star Tribune.

According to a Federal Trade Commission notice reviewed by the Star Tribune, UnitedHealth's acquisition of the 63,000-member health plan includes Baton Rouge, La.-based Capital City Medical Group. At least seven physicians are practicing at the group's clinics near Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Financial terms of the deal, which was announced in June, were not disclosed.

UnitedHealth's Optum arm has quietly been adding providers to its ranks since its acquisition of 250 Las Vegas-area physicians in 2008. UnitedHealth's 32,000 employed or aligned physicians care for 15 million patients each year.
