UnitedHealth unit's pharmacy to close Houston sites

Avella Specialty Pharmacy, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group's pharmacy benefit manager OptumRx, is ending its drug compounding services at two Houston sites, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Texas Workforce Commission documents reviewed by the Houston Chronicle show 161 people will be permanently laid off due to the closures. The layoffs were set to begin March 1.

In a statement to the Houston Chronicle, OptumRx said: "Following a review of Avella's business, we decided to discontinue performing drug compounding services at our Houston locations. Avella's core products and solutions remain an important part of our efforts to improve health outcomes and experiences for consumers while reducing overall healthcare costs."
