President Donald Trump's administration is considering requiring hospitals and providers to publish the prices they negotiate with payers for patients to see, according to The Wall Street Journal.
HHS is seeking public comment on whether patients have the right to know the confidential prices and different discounts insurers get ahead of receiving treatment, federal officials said. If implemented, such a change could give patients more decision-making power and could lower copays and deductibles, according to the report.
The potential change could also upend the control hospitals and payers have over healthcare price negotiations. Any regulation would likely face opposition and legal challenges from hospitals and payers, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The call for public comment on the matter was largely overlooked. It took place in a 700-page patient-data proposal released in January. The request represents a step toward a possible rule that could instate fines for noncompliance if implemented, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The comment period for the proposal closes May 3.
