Kentucky's attorney general issued an alert in light of recent reports of medical billing scams targeting Louisville residents.
Attorney General Andy Beshear said April 9 that reports have surfaced about a suspicious van driving around and paying Medicaid beneficiaries $20 in exchange for a DNA sample and health insurance data. Other Medicare beneficiaries said they have received calls offering them medical devices. According to Mr. Beshear, one resident reported being billed $1,300 for medically unnecessary back braces.
In both scams, Mr. Beshear said the scammers try to steal insurance and personal information from individuals in an attempt to get reimbursed for the services and medical devices.
"Scammers are exploiting Kentuckians' medical needs in an attempt to take in illegal profits," said Mr. Beshear. "Kentuckians should rely on the advice of their primary care physicians — not someone who is calling them by phone or driving by in an unmarked vehicle."
