The U.S. Office of Inspector General found Wisconsin's Medicaid program erroneously paid capitation payments totaling $589,478 for patients who had already died, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The error was found in an audit of the program's payments from 2010 to 2015. During that time, Wisconsin's Medicaid program worked with 31 managed care organizations and paid $12.8 billion to those organizations for the care of Medicaid enrollees. The OIG found 1,654 of those payments were erroneously paid out for patients who had died.
The OIG requested Wisconsin recoup the payments and refund the federal government $347,822 for its share of the funds. Wisconsin intends to comply with this request and improve its process for death determinations, according to the report.
