While more Americans have health insurance than did in 2010, underinsurance rates remain high, according to the Commonwealth Fund's Biennial Health Insurance Survey.
The survey, conducted between June 27 and Nov. 11, 2018, included a sample of 4,225 adults. Respondents were considered underinsured if a significant portion of their annual household income went to out-of-pocket healthcare costs or insurance deductibles.
Researchers found 45 percent of U.S. adults are inadequately insured. That's about the same as 2010, but key changes have occured. For one, the greatest deterioration in quality and coverage comprehension took place among employer plans.
About 158 million people, or more than half of Americans under age 65, get their health coverage through an employer.
