Massachusetts residents bought fake health insurance, state says

Residents in Massachusetts have been scammed by a fake health insurer allegedly behind a $100 million scheme, The Boston Globe.

Officials with the state's health insurance exchange, Massachusetts Health Connector, said about 50 residents bought sham health insurance from Simple Health Plans. Simple Health Plans is accused of selling fake health plans that left tens of thousands of Americans without insurance.

Last fall, a judge ordered the Florida-based company to shut down temporarily after a request to do so from the Federal Trade Commision.

Massachusetts Health Connector officials said they would allow residents affected to buy new health insurance through the exchange during a special enrollment period.
