IRS won't accept tax returns omitting healthcare requirements

The Internal Revenue Service will not accept electronically-filed 2018 tax returns lacking information regarding the ACA's health coverage requirements.

"After a review of our process and discussions with the National Taxpayer Advocate, the IRS has determined identifying omissions and requiring taxpayers to provide health coverage information at the point of filing makes it easier for the taxpayer to successfully file a tax return and minimizes related refund delays," according to the IRS' website.

The IRS will only accept electronic tax returns in which taxpayers indicate if they had coverage, were exempt from the ACA's individual mandate or made a shared responsibility payment. Paper filings lacking the information may be suspended and refunds may be delayed.

This February, the IRS quietly stopped rejecting tax returns in which the filer did not fill out their health coverage status.
