Humana to cut unspecified number of jobs, top positions in Kentucky, Wisconsin

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana will lay off an undisclosed number of employees in Kentucky and Wisconsin as part of the insurer's growth strategy following its unsuccessful bid to merge with Aetna, according to a Humana spokesperson.

Humana employees familiar with the layoffs told the Courier-Journal the job cuts will affect positions companywide, from top management to entry-level employees. Claims processing workers in De Pere, Wis., will also be affected, according to a Green Bay Post-Gazette report.

In a statement to Becker's Hospital Review, Humana spokesperson Kate Marx said the layoffs are part of a reorganization that includes creating "new jobs that are aligned with the company's enhanced growth strategy … and phas[ing] out positions that are no longer as aligned." The new growth strategy includes focusing on individuals with chronic conditions and individuals eligible for Medicare Advantage plans, among other strategies.

Ms. Marx added "any Humana associate affected by this realignment of our resources is offered up to 60 days to obtain another position within the company, and severance and outplacement assistance if a new position is not secured."

Ms. Marx said the number of employees affected has "not been discussed internally or externally because [it] will depend on how people choose to move around the company." She also confirmed to Courier-Journal the Louisville, Ky. workforce will remain at 12,500 and the number of employees at De Pere, Wis., will also reamin the same.

The layoffs in Kentucky and Wisconsin come after Humana said it would lay off about 500 workers in Ohio and Florida.
