Humana reports 3% drop in 'Unhealthy Days' under Bold Goal initiative

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana's Bold Goal project improved health in its seven target communities.

The insurer reported the finding in its 2017 Bold Goal Progress Report, which measured the progress of Humana's aspiration to improve the health of its communities by 20 percent by 2020. The initiative, which launched nearly two years ago, focuses on collaborating with local public health and care intervention programs in seven communities: Baton Rouge, La., Broward, Fla., Knoxville, Tenn., Louisville, Ky., New Orleans, San Antonio and Tampa Bay, Fla.

The Bold Goal project helped to reduce the number of "Unhealthy Days" by an average of 3 percent from 2015 to 2016. For this finding, Humana used the CDC's "Healthy Days" survey tool as a benchmark for community health. The survey tool measures a person's holistic health, including mental and physical health.

Here are four other findings from the report.

1. Among its national membership, Humana saw a 2 percent improvement in Healthy Days.

2. Humana said its employees are on track to improve their Healthy Days measurement by 20 percent by the end of this year.

3. San Antonio, the first community to partake in the Bold Goal initiative, saw a 9 percent reduction in its number of Unhealthy Days. Humana attributed the decrease to addressing food insecurity and access to behavioral health services.

4. Moving forward, Humana said its priorities include diabetes, behavioral health, food insecurity, loneliness and social isolation.
