Humana expands orthopedic bundles: 5 things to know

Humana added providers to its bundled payment models for spinal fusion surgeries and hip or knee joint replacements, the insurer said July 17.

Five things to know:

1. Humana launched its Spinal Fusion Episode-Based Model this year. Under the model, physicians and clinics are paid more for improving health outcomes and cost among spinal fusion patients.

2. The model is measured by readmissions, cervical complications and lumbar complications, as well as average risk-adjusted episodic cost of care.

3. With four new agreements inked with orthopedic and neurosurgical practices, the program now spans seven states.

4. Humana's Total Joint Replacement Episode-Based Model, launched in 2016, added 11 new agreements. Now more than 75 medical practices across 21 states are included in the program.

5. The Total Joint Replacement Episode-Based Model aims to improve quality, outcomes and cost for a member's whole joint replacement episode of care. It also offers providers higher payment for better outcomes.
