Humana's CFO said the Trump administration's proposal to end rebates to pharmacy benefit managers will increase health insurance premiums, according to CNBC.
Three things to know:
1. Under a proposed rule HHS released Jan. 31, drug manufacturers would no longer be able to give rebates to pharmacy benefit managers, but they would be allowed to offer discounted prices directly to consumers.
2. However, some health insurance executives said the plan, which would require insurers to pass drugmaker discounts to seniors, would end up raising premiums.
"Our perspective is that that would raise premiums for the broader populations. And that in of itself I think creates some disruption in the marketplace that we have to think through," Humana CFO Brian Kane told investors Feb. 6 during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call.
3. Insurance executives have also raised concerns about how the political uncertainty will affect plan designs for 2020, which they will begin to mull this spring, according to CNBC.
