How UnitedHealth, Anthem & 6 other payers performed in Q3

Anthem, Centene, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealth Group and WellCare Health Plans all reported higher profits in the third quarter of fiscal year 2019. At the same time, Molina Healthcare saw profits decline, while Aetna boosted CVS Health's performance.

Here's how the eight payers fared in the three-month period ended September 30:

1. Aetna boosted CVS Health's profits by 10 percent in the third quarter. CVS reported a net income of $1.5 billion, up from $1.4 billion last year. Its revenue was $63.8 billion, higher than the $63 billion expected.

2. Anthem's total revenues grew by 14.7 percent to $26.7 billion, compared to $23.3 billion in the same period a year prior. The insurer ended the third quarter with a $1.2 billion profit, up 23.2 percent from $960 million reported in the same period a year prior.

3. Centene's revenues totaled nearly $19 billion in the third quarter, up 17.2 percent year over year from $16.2 billion. The insurer ended the period with a $95 million profit, fives times higher than the $19 million it recorded in the third quarter of 2018.

4. Cigna's total revenues grew to approximately $38.6 billion in the third quarter, more than three times the $11.5 billion the health insurer posted in the same quarter of 2018. Cigna ended the period with net income of $1.4 billion, up 75 percent from $772 million reported in the third quarter of 2018.

5. Humana posted third-quarter revenues of $16.2 billion in 2019, up 14.3 percent year over year from $14.2 billion. After including nonoperating results, the insurer ended the period with net income of $689 million, up 7 percent from $644 million posted in the same quarter of 2018.

6. Molina Healthcare's total revenue fell 9.7 percent to $4.2 billion in the third quarter, down from $4.7 billion in the same quarter a year prior. Molina ended the period with net income of $175 million, down about 11 percent from $197 million recorded in the same period a year prior.

7. UnitedHealth Group posted revenues of $60.4 billion in the third quarter, up $3.8 billion year over year. After including operating and nonoperating expenses, UnitedHealth recorded a $5 billion profit during the period, up 9 percent from $4.6 billion in the same period a year prior.

8. WellCare Health Plans ended the third quarter with $241 million in net income, up more than 70 percent year over year from the $130.6 million the insurer recorded in the same period last year. Revenues also grew, climbing more than 40 percent year over year to $7.1 billion.
