How employers are addressing healthcare costs in 2020

Nearly half of employers see curbing healthcare benefit spending as a top priority for 2020; however, only 10 percent ranked managing employees' share of healthcare costs the same way, according to a survey published by telemedicine provider First Stop Health.

The online survey, conducted for First Stop Health by SourceMedia Research/Employee Benefit News and Adviser, included responses from 155 companies with at least 500 employees operating across 20 industries. The survey asked employers about how they plan to address benefits, cost savings and return on investment in 2020.

Only 30 percent of employers said they plan on maintaining business as usual when it comes to offering new health benefits for 2020. Forty percent of employers said they plan to modify how much they spend on healthcare costs versus employees to better manage costs.

Across the board, a key struggle of employers is measuring ROI when it comes to managing benefits, according to the survey. First Stop Health recommended that employers further explore new strategies focused on cost containment and employee retention.
