The five largest health insurers in the nation produced mixed results in the first quarter of 2016.
1. Anthem recorded revenues of nearly $20.3 billion in the first quarter of 2016, an increase of 6.5 percent over the $19.05 billion reported in the same quarter of the year prior. The Indianapolis-based insurer ended the quarter with net income of $703 million, down 18.7 percent from $865.2 million in the same period of the year prior.
2. Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group reported revenues of $44.5 billion in the first quarter of 2016, up 25 percent from the same period of 2015. The insurer posted net income of $1.6 billion in the first quarter, up from $1.4 billion in the same period of the year prior.
3. Cigna reported revenues of nearly $9.9 billion in the first quarter of 2016, up from $9.5 billion in the same period of the year prior. The Bloomfield, Conn.-based insurer's net income fell 2.6 percent year over year to $519 million in the first quarter of 2016.
4. Louisville, Ky.-based Humana reported revenues of $13.8 billion in the first quarter of 2016, down slightly from the same period of last year. The insurer recorded net income of $234 million in the first quarter, down 46 percent from the same period of 2015.
5. Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna reported revenues of $15.7 billion in the first quarter of 2016, up nearly 4 percent from the same period of 2015. The insurer ended the quarter with net income of $726.6 million, down from net income of $777.5 million in the same period of the year prior.
