Roughly half of Cigna's provider payments tied to value

In Cigna's top 40 markets, the health insurer now pays 50.5 percent of its providers through alternative payment models.

Cigna said the shift has generated more than $600 million in medical cost savings from 2013-17. The insurer reimburses more than 240 primary care provider organizations, 500 hospital facilities and 270 specialist programs based on value.

The top-performing providers under Cigna's model have a quality performance that is 11 percent higher than the national average, and 92 percent of participating providers met or exceeded quality benchmarks.

Cigna, which now owns pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts, has more than 3.6 million commercial members in value-based payment arrangements.
