For the first time, all 50 states are reporting data to CMS' program for Medicaid oversight

CMS on June 26 released set of updates detailing the agency's initiatives to strengthen Medicaid program integrity, including a milestone related to the agency's Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System.

TMSIS is a state-reported program CMS officials have referred to as one of the agency's primary efforts to improve oversight of Medicaid data. However, the national rollout of the TMSIS program has been hindered by a number of technological problems since its launch in 2011. In late 2016, only 18 states were reporting data to the program.

In CMS' June 26 announcement, the agency noted that, for the first time, all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico are now providing the agency with access to Medicaid claims and provider data through TMSIS. During the next few months, CMS plans to validate the data quality and begin efforts to analyze the data for program integrity purposes.
