Florida Blue, Florida Hospital yet to agree on contract

If health insurer Florida Blue and Orlando-based Florida Hospital do not come to an agreement over their contract by June 1, Florida Blue members will have to find new providers or pay out-of-network costs for care at Florida Hospital facilities, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

Last month, Florida Hospital informed medical staff that Florida Blue has terminated its contract with all 23 Florida division hospitals, as well as all Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System physician groups, according to the report.

In a statement to the Orlando Sentinel, the hospital said Florida Blue's decision to terminate its contract with Florida Hospital on June 1 "puts patients' access at risk."

However, there is still a chance the dispute will be resolved before the termination date, as Florida Hospital and the insurer are still involved in negotiations to resolve the issue.

Florida Blue officials refer to their action as a renegotiation of the contract, saying, "We let them know contractually that the rates that are in the existing agreement put us at too much of a disadvantage, and we have a desire to renegotiate those rates," according to the report.

Thousands of Florida Blue members would be affected if both entities do not come to an agreement over their contract.
