Cigna profit soars 53%: 4 things to know

Cigna posted net income of $915 million in the first quarter of 2018, up 53 percent from $598 million reported in the same period a year prior.

Here are four things to know about Cigna's financial results for the three months ended March 31.

1. Cigna recorded revenue of $11.4 billion in the first quarter of this year, up 9 percent year over year. Growth in the payer's commercial healthcare and global supplemental benefits segments primarily affected the gains.

2. Cigna added 327,000 customers in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period a year prior, for a total of 16.2 million members. Higher enrollment across select, individual and middle market segments drove the increase in total membership.

3. The payer's medical care ratio, or the amount of money it pays toward members' medical expenses, was 73.7 percent for commercial members and 84.5 percent for government members.

4. The strong first quarter results come as Cigna moves forward with its $67 billion acquisition of Express Scripts, slated to close by the end of this year.
